Buying to benefit a nonprofit organization
In this article

eBay Giving Works is our dedicated program for charity listings. When you buy items marked with the charity icon , part or all of your purchase will support a certified nonprofit.

Finding eBay Giving Works listings

Our Giving Works listings are marked by the charity icon in search results. Only certified nonprofit organizations are eligible to benefit from eBay Giving Works listings. You can see information about the benefiting nonprofit organization and the donation amount the seller has chosen on the item page.

To see only eBay Giving Works listings, please visit eBay Giving Works, where you can search for items by category, specific cause, or organization.  Learn how to find a nonprofit organization.

Buying an eBay Giving Works item

If you win an eBay Giving Works listing, follow the seller’s payment instructions.

MissionFish, a nonprofit organization, administers the eBay Giving Works program. MissionFish collects the donation from the seller and forwards it to the nonprofit, retaining a small portion to offset their services.

Note: When you buy from a nonprofit organization that is selling on its own behalf (Nonprofit Direct Selling), you pay the nonprofit directly. MissionFish doesn’t process these sales.

Tax deductions for buyers

Generally, you can’t claim a tax deduction for eBay Giving Works items you buy. However, there is one possible exception:

If you purchased the item from a nonprofit direct seller, and the item description clearly stated the fair market value of the item, and your final sale price exceeded the fair market value of the item, then any amount you paid, excluding shipping, above the fair market value of the item could potentially be treated as a donation to the nonprofit.

Note: eBay cannot and does not act as a tax advisor. You should consult your accountant or legal counselor about your specific circumstances.
