How to Sell--Vehicles
Welcome to eBay Motors. If you want to earn top dollar for your vehicle, you'll need to do a little homework. We recommend you read this section and print out the Seller's Checklist before you list your vehicle for sale on eBay Motors.

How to register
Whether you are here to buy or sell, you'll need to register first. But don't worry, it's fast and free. All you need to do is give us simple information such as your name, your email address, and the country you live in. Then you're ready to get started.

Set up a sellers account
If you want to sell on eBay Motors you are required to create a Seller's Account. You can also automatically sign up to accept credit cards or electronic checks through eBay Online Payment by Billpoint.

Make your vehicle sparkle
A clean vehicle looks better in pictures and appeals to buyers during test drives. The newer the vehicle looks, both inside and out, the higher the resale value. We recommend that you have your vehicle washed and/or detailed before you take pictures or invite potential buyers to test drive. Here are a few tips:

  • Wash the outside of the vehicle--and don't forget the wheels and tires.
  • Be sure to clean the inside of the vehicle. Wash the windows, wipe down all surfaces and vacuum or brush the seats, mats and carpet.
  • Remove any miscellaneous items from the back seat or trunk.

Use an inspection to increase buyer interest
Have your vehicle inspected and provide the buyer with the inspection report.

You should also check your vehicle's existing warranty information. This warranty may be transferable to the next owner. Be sure to include this information in your description.

Prepare to pay off a lien
If you still owe a lender money on the vehicle you're selling, check with your finance company to find out the procedure they require of you and the buyer.

Locate the vehicle title
Make sure you have title documents--you'll need these to transfer ownership.

Perform a title check
You may wish to run a check on your vehicle to make sure the title information kept in public records is accurate. Your insurance company or the state Motor Vehicle Department should be able to provide you with this information. You should disclose information about the vehicle title in your listing.

Check with your Motor Vehicle Department
Some states (such as California) require that the seller complete a smog check or meet other requirements before selling a vehicle to a new owner. Check with your state Department of Motor Vehicles about your obligations when selling a vehicle.

Don't forget taxes
Check with your state Motor Vehicle Department to determine if you are under any obligation to pay taxes when you sell your vehicle.

Find the service records
If you have kept service records on repairs and maintenance, collect them and have them available for the buyer.

Decide on test drive options
Decide if you are going to offer test drives to potential buyers and provide details in your description. This can help buyers make the final decision to buy.

If you meet to test drive the vehicle, eBay Motors suggests you bring a friend and meet in a public place, like a coffee shop.

Accepting payment
Decide what kind of payment you will accept, and be explicit in your item description.

Consider shipping options
While many cars are simply picked up, consider offering shipping options to bidders. DAS provides vehicle shipping services throughout the US. This will improve your response and the final price of the vehicle.

How to list
Now that you have printed out the Seller's checklist and you have gathered the necessary information about your vehicle, you are ready to list your item for sale. We recommend that you read the information below which explains some of the options you have when listing your vehicle for sale on eBay Motors.

Categories
The first thing you will need to do is select a category to list your item on the Seller's Overview page.

Fees
eBay Motors charges sellers a variety of listing fees, depending on how you choose to list and promote your item.

Listing Options and Featured Auctions
To help get more attention for your listing, eBay Motors offers many options in addition to the standard listing. Add as many as you like. Listing options include: eBay Featured, Gallery Featured, Category Featured, Boldface Titles, Listing Icons, and Gallery Item. Click here for details.

Promoting your auction
A short, descriptive title and a complete description of your item will also help your sales. Be descriptive and clear about item details, payment terms and shipping options.

How can I be sure I get the price I want for my item?
As a seller, you can choose the type of auction that gets the results--and the price--you want.

If you don't want to sell below a certain price you can either:

  • Set your starting bid at the minimum price you are willing to accept
  • Or use a Reserve Price Auction. A Reserve Price Auction lets you set the reserve price to the minimum amount you are willing to accept while allowing you to set your starting price lower. You are not obligated to sell the item unless the high bidder meets or exceeds the reserve price.

Make your listing look great with linked pictures or fancy text
Picture tutorial
Every experienced eBay seller knows--you get more bids and higher prices when you use pictures. eBay Motors offers a step-by-step tutorial on how to use images in your listings.

Common HTML tags
You can also use HTML to spice up your listings. See how at Common HTML Tags.

Advertise your auction
Just use this URL to point people to your auction:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=XXX (enter your assigned item number in place of the XXX)

During the auction - Respond to all inquiries promptly
Bidders or potential bidders might email you during the course of the auction. Be sure to get right back to them.

Changing your listing
The information you can change in your listing depends upon the time you have left before your lsiting ends and whether your item has had bids or purchases.

If your item has received no bids or purchases and does not end within 12 hours, you can revise anything in your listing except the selling format (for example, you can't change your auction-style listing to a fixed price listing).

If your item has received a bid or ends within 12 hours, you can only:

  • Add to the item description or add a second category
(Exception: If your listing has a bid and ends within 12 hours, you can't add to your description or add a second category)
  • Add optional seller features to increase your item's visibility.
To change or add information or upgrade your listing to attract more buyers, please go to the Revise Your Item page.

Tracking an auction
There are various ways to keep track of an item you are interested in:
  • Use My eBay. My eBay can be used to view items you are selling, bidding on, your favorite categories, your recent feedback-all in one convenient place.
  • Setting a bookmark on the item page with your browser
  • Noting the item number and finding it by using the "search by number"
    function in eBay Search
  • Clicking the "Watch this Item" link on the left hand side of an item page. This marks the item to be watched in your My eBay page.
Canceling bids and ending auctions early
You can cancel bids in an auction if you've decided to end the auction, a bidder contacts you to back out of a bid, or you can't verify the identity of a bidder after trying all reasonable means of contact.

There may be times when you have a valid reason to end an auction. If you wish to end an auction now click here.

After the auction
eBay Motors is only a venue for your auction. After an auction closes, you and your trading partner are responsible for completing the sale.

Contact the buyer
You will receive an email notice at the end of the auction. This email contains the final price of the item (not including any shipping charges) and contact information for the winning bidder. You should try to contact the high bidder within 3 days.

Payment, Relisting, and Credit requests
You and the buyer work out the details of the transaction. When you list the item you should be as clear as possible about your payment terms so everything goes smoothly after the purchase.

If your item does not sell, you may relist it. If it sells when you relist, we will credit you for the second listing fee. To relist, go to the completed auction item page and click on the "relist this item" link.

Listing fees are not refundable except when you relist, but under certain circumstances, final value fees are refundable. Click here for more information on final value fee refunds.

Transferring title
In most states, the Department of Motor Vehicles has easy-to-follow instructions for the private sale of vehicles, including the process for title transfer and taxes. If you have questions about this process, contact your local DMV for more information.
For a list of Motor Vehicle Department web sites click here.

If you still owe money and have a lien on the vehicle, or if the buyer is paying with a loan, the finance companies may have special requirements. Ask your finance company about these details, and check with the buyer about theirs.

Shipping
DAS offers auto shipping for eBay users. Click here for more information.

Leaving feedback
Leaving feedback for the buyer after the transaction is an important way to help other eBay members learn about the buyer. If you have had a good experience, or a bad one, take a minute to leave your comment. The easiest way to leave feedback for a buyer is to go to the item page for the finished auction and click on the "leave feedback" link.
