Why does eBay have additional requirements in order to sell?

If you visited the eBay site before October 22, 1999, you may know that we did not have additional requirements in order to sell.

But as we've grown, so has the need to make sure that we provide the safest environment for the eBay community. We now require a credit card or other form of verification to help ensure that:

  • Sellers are of a legal age
  • Sellers are serious about listing an item on eBay
  • You are further protected from irresponsible or fraudulent sellers.
This may seem like an extreme measure, but there are really good reasons for asking for this information. For example, a single fraudulent seller can ruin the experience of one of your potential buyers - and taint the reputation for the majority of honest sellers. Additionally, hoax listings, such as a human kidney, only serve to clutter the listings for serious sellers like you.

No credit card? Use ID Verify If you do not have or don't want to provide a credit card, you can go through ID Verify as an alternative. ID Verify uses a third party to check the information you provide and verify that information for accuracy.

Please Note: If you've listed an item on eBay before October 22, you do not have to provide a credit card or go through ID Verify in order to list an item.
